Though unheard of just ten years ago, data governance is now an ensconced practice, commonly found in a wide variety of user organizations. Now that data governance has proved its concept successfully, it faces other challenges, namely how to grow and sustain momentum. For example, many organizations are straining to expand data governance from its original limited scope to a broader enterprise scope.
Others are struggling to transition from a mostly people-and-process affair to the use of data governance software tools. Other challenges include retaining executive sponsorship, policing governance policies, linking data governance to other forms of governance, making data goals relevant to business goals, changing data ownership into an enterprise asset, and determining the role of governance for new and evolving areas like big data, analytics, social media and Web data.
