A Case for Data Integration!
Most of you who have ever met me know that I am a healthy person. I try very hard to eat right and exercise. So, going to the hospital for a procedure where they had to put me under was the last thing I wanted to do. I have NEVER EVER been in a hospital except to visit someone who was sick.
So here are the challenges we were up against:
- I have allergy-induced asthma and I just got over a cold that went deep into my chest
- I panic very easily
- I run at a very high anxiety rate (you already knew that!)
- I have never stayed in a hospital or had any day-surgery procedures
I told these same four parameters to:
- The doctor
- The doctor’s scheduler – who asked me these specific questions
- The hospital pre-op nurses
- The anesthesiologist
- Anybody I ran into
I also told them that they might want to give me a nebulizer treatment for my asthma before and after they stick that damn tube down my throat. Did they even contact my allergy/asthma doctor? NO! If I told that many people the same thing, why was the information not interpreted and disbursed properly? The doctor’s computer system and the hospital computer systems all had the same information. Where did the integration fall down?
Well, I was definitely going to find out! You knew that, right? After some research, I found out that instead of integrating patient (customer) information and alerting the practitioners of any patient issues (a process which can be automated), both facilities relied on verbal transfer of data. This practice is unacceptable in high-risk patients, especially first-timers! It brings up the question – who is looking out for me other than me?
This may present the perfect opportunity for vendors like DataFlux who understand the importance of good-quality, integrated customer data. Let’s go get 'em and make customer/patient care a high priority!
