We Are Family!

June 28th, 2007

It’s almost family reunion time for me. Every June it is off to Missouri for a long weekend of family, fun, and food! My husband and I will be packing up to hit the road, or hit the airport in our case. I love seeing my family. They are all a bit different than I am; however, my true inherited characteristics do pop out now and then to dazzle those around me with some down-home humor. - Read the rest of this entry »

Leadership Lessons from The Dog Whisperer

June 26th, 2007

As I mentioned in a prior blog, I really like The Dog Whisperer. For those of you who don’t get cable, it’s a show on the National Geographic channel that features dog trainer to the stars, Cesar Milan, as he rehabilitates people. That’s right, Cesar Milan makes it clear that most behavior problems aren’t the dog’s fault but the owner’s. I like this show so much I actually mastered the TIVO. - Read the rest of this entry »

Paintin’ and Fixin’ Time!

June 22nd, 2007

I love my niece and nephew! They have been a big part of my life since the day they were born (some 30+ years ago). They have decided to come to Colorado (from Texas) for a week and paint the inside of my house. I am thrilled, and thankful! Seems I just can’t get around to painting the inside of the house, and a few other chores. Procrastination is one of my flaws. Seems I can put off unpleasant tasks until the last moment. Am I the only one that does this? Not hardly! - Read the rest of this entry »

The Sopranos and Datus Interruptus

June 20th, 2007

Re: The Sopranos finale, add me to the list of all those people who went “Whaa???” Amidst some none-too-subtle buildup, the screen went black. No resolution. No tying up loose ends with Dr. Melfi. No coming clean with Carmela. Nada-bing! Against a Journey soundtrack, no less. It was all so unsatisfying. - Read the rest of this entry »

MDM Stakeholders

June 18th, 2007

Who are the stakeholders in an MDM program? When we consider that MDM is an enterprise initiative, we must consider that there is a wide constituency that needs to be engaged when seeking to consolidate data from across multiple application spaces, data stores, and lines of business. In our MDM engagements, we attempt to identify the classes of participants in order to identify their desires and clarify their requirements. So far, I have come up with a small list of roles within an organization that must be engaged as part of the MDM program: - Read the rest of this entry »

Summer is Just Around the Corner!

June 15th, 2007

It’s June in Colorado, and things are warming up. The trees are amazingly green and the mountain flowers are blooming. The choke cherry blossoms are white, and they smell so good. Everyone will be taking vacations to the beach or camping in some mountain wilderness, making implementation of our planned work more difficult to schedule. Not that that is bad, just inconvenient! I think I will take this time to clean up loose ends, like getting caught up on my reading. You know, some really good book that has nothing to do with computers, data quality, profiling, data integration, or ETL. HA HA, like that will happen! - Read the rest of this entry »

Change Agency and Prognostication

June 13th, 2007

I like to think that good information professionals are really change agents at heart, since a large part of their job is to attempt to subtly introduce ideas that, over time, will result in wholesale changes to the organization. But what often distinguishes the successful change agents from the unsuccessful ones include two common attributes: - Read the rest of this entry »

Back from Boston!

June 11th, 2007

Well, I am back from The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI) in Boston. What a fun place! The bread ain’t so bad, and how ‘bout them Red Sox? I taught a class called Data Profiling in Practice! It was a lot of fun. I probably had the most advanced class I have ever taught. The participants were interesting, and understood the importance of good quality data in the enterprise. We shared experiences with data quality issues that have persistently bitten us through the years. It was a very gratifying class! - Read the rest of this entry »

More From the Governance Summits

June 8th, 2007

Here is another question/comment from the recent Data Governance Executive Summit in which I participated with Tony Fisher from DataFlux. One attendee asked me to comment on the following:

"Some argue ROI is not needed for Data Management. It is like saying we should justify the air we breathe. It’s something that’s needed for success. Thoughts?"

What’s Your Quality Worth?

June 6th, 2007

I was speaking at a local chapter of DAMA last week about the fundamentals of data profiling. It was the first time we invited some vendors to the presentation. We had two well-known vendors in to show us how they do data profiling.  It turned out to be a very nice event, with about forty attendees. Not shabby for a girl from the farm. - Read the rest of this entry »
