More on MDM Synchrony

February 29th, 2008

In one recent post I noodled on the concept of master data synchrony, and promised to follow up on some dimensions of synchronization that may drive application requirements that feed the decision regarding the underlying MDM architecture. The proposed dimensions are: - Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Freak Out About Data Governance!

February 27th, 2008

Lately, we have sure been talking a lot about data governance. Bloggers are blogging, chat rooms are chatting, articles are being written, frameworks are being created, and maturity models are being developed – all surrounding the subject of data governance. Much like anything else in this industry, data governance will find its footing and take hold. By this time next year, I guarantee that there will be more to data governance than we are thinking about today. - Read the rest of this entry »

Re-use is Key in Data Governance

February 25th, 2008

Having already raised the topic of a Shared Business Vocabulary in my previous blog I might as well at this early stage of my blogging on this DataFlux site put it into a wider context. That context is of course Data Governance. This is such a grandiose term which clearly has the objective of robust end-to-end management of enterprise data. Effectively this means that Data Governance must address several things. These include: - Read the rest of this entry »

Model It …..Consistently, of Course

February 22nd, 2008

So far in my blog I have looked at a shared business vocabulary as the metadata foundation stone that needs to be in place as the starting point for enterprise data governance. We have also looked at a range of technologies that need to have access to that same metadata. Now lets take it further. - Read the rest of this entry »

February 20th, 2008

Do you find it amazing that NOW, after all these years, companies want to ‘Govern’ their data? Is this deja vu or what? I feel like I have been here before! - Read the rest of this entry »

Shared Business Vocabulary Needed Everywhere

February 18th, 2008

While I appreciate that many of you may focus on data quality and data integration in the context of building data warehouses, data marts and master data management hubs, I would encourage you to look wider at other technologies that are likely to want to make use of a Shared Business Vocabulary (SBV). - Read the rest of this entry »

Good Leadership, Good Data, Goodbye

February 15th, 2008

“The genius of a good leader is to leave behind a situation which common sense, without the grace of genius, can deal with successfully.”

Commentator Walter Lippmann’s quote (circa 1945) made me think about data. It made me think that maybe we don’t have enough leaders espousing the need for good, clean, meaningful, usable information in our organizations. If we did, data quality, integration, and analysis would be a lot more straightforward than they are now. - Read the rest of this entry »

Business Metadata

February 13th, 2008

I attended the Denver Chapter of DAMA this week to listen to two friends speak about business metadata (Lowell Fryman and Bonnie O’Neil). It was really great reconnecting with people in the industry in the Denver area. - Read the rest of this entry »

Governance Failure?

February 11th, 2008

Having preached about data governance for the past few years, I am curious as to two important questions regarding its effectiveness. This has stemmed from reading the paper the past few weeks (or months, perhaps?) about banks that are documenting losses due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Of course, here we are talking about an area in which we truly expect there to be financial risk governance and oversight, ostensibly to ensure that exactly what is happening shouldn’t happen. Nonetheless, how is it that all these banks and investment companies seemed to be caught in the same deluge? So here are my questions: - Read the rest of this entry »

Your Data Bill Of Rights

February 8th, 2008

My colleague Rob Paller recently sent me a link to a website called Wesabe. Wesabe represents a community of users who manage their finances through the site, monitoring their spending and in the process sharing advice on financial management. No surprise that the site adamantly emphasizes data security. - Read the rest of this entry »
