Do You Do Data?
February 6th, 2008
I consider the first of any year a good time to reflect on what I have been doing, and what I would like to do in the new year. One thing I have learned this last year is that ‘I DO DATA’. The amazing thing is, I really really like data. OK, OK call me a geek, but I think that the quality, governance, and process issues surrounding data are fun!
Let’s examine what it means to “Do Data”. For me, it includes any process, model, database, architecture, data stewardship issue, data governance issue, or metadata repositories that include data:
- Process includes process modeling, data mapping, integration issues, data profiling, and cleansing.
- Modeling includes the logical data model, and the physical data model. Resolution of many to many relationships, and primary key identification is very important.
- Database administration usually includes performance issues with acquiring, and loading the data. As well as, design for optimal data retrieval. Backup and recovery is extremely important where real-time data is used.
- Data Architecture includes the interaction of all the data in the enterprise. Redundant stores of data are identified. Conversion and integration issues are resolved.
- Data Stewardship includes business rules surrounding the data.
- Data Governance (overlapping data stewardship) includes how and who uses the data. As well as, prioritization of integration and conversion.
- Metadata includes all interaction, navigation, and informational data about any entity or attribute in any database.
