Data Governance — AGAIN!
Today was our local DAMA chapter meeting. I presented on what I call Actionable Data Governance, while DataFlux presented information on the business rules engine and the future of data governance. It was well attended (with the right people).
Here are the highlights: Actionable Data Governance is the process and technology usage that shows value to the organization. Yes, yes — it is the physical part of data governance. The process portion could be how you understand, cleanse, and monitor your customer data. The technology portion is the tools (data quality, data profiling, ETL). It is extremely important how these tools are used, and how to track business rules over time. For example how data is used (usage) is a big deal when you are trying to protect customer data. We ask questions like:
- What data is used, and how often?
- What program or person is using the data?
- What reports use the data, and how often?
- Who has access to the data in the enterprise?
Joe Rademacher, of DataFlux, presented information on monitoring for data governance. He explained how you should start with something you can control, like defining domain data and data types. The second step would be to document and develop business rules. The third step is applying the rules real-time. This helps tremendously during data integration initiatives. The fourth— and final — step is applying the business rules and monitoring over time. Thanks Joe, it was a good DAMA meeting!
