Minutes from DAMA- Part 1

March 20th, 2008

I am currently sitting in Bonnie O’Neil’s and Lowell Fryman’s workshop on starting a metadata program at the 2008 DAMA/Meta Data conference in San Diego. A topic that continues to emerge is the challenge of convincing the business client of the value of metadata. Part of the exercises focus on establishing the financial justification. While I am not sure I agree with the example they provided (referenced from some 2001 IDC report about failed searches), I do like the approach they are taking for shaking out a process for evaluating financial value.

For example, some questions may include:

  • What is the business initiative?
  • What are the productivity percentages associated with the ways that metadata cotributes to the business initiative?
  • What business processes will improve as a result of implementing a metadata program?

In general, this thought process is great for data management professionals, since it forces us to think about business results driven by business imperatives, and not by new technology.
