Privacy and Data Governance
May 7th, 2008
At the recent data governance executive briefings that I participated in with Scott Gidley from DataFlux, one of the examples that came up in conversation regarding data governance was that of data privacy. Protection of personal information provides a great example fro discussing data governance because it covers the main issues:
- The existence of a business policy that is well-defined and is presented to the participants (i.e., the customer/user constituency)
- A high degree of impact occurs should the policy be violated
- Potential regulatory constraints and consequences for non-observance
- A risk that the absence of governance will lead to the impact
- A requirement for external audit
- Poorly-worded jargon that implies information policies and business data rules
We will be looking more at where privacy issues imply the need for data governance, and I will summarize soon… Meanwhile, email me or post your own experiences? Thanks!

The blog content appearing on this site does not necessarily represent the opinions of DataFlux

Just wanted to underscore that concern. We post a lot about a related issue, i.e. achieving the right balance between privacy and security concerns. As Usual, the right answer to the question is “both” but the trick is in the execution.
