Six Sigma and Data Quality – Measure

August 27th, 2008

The next step in the six sigma methodology is measure. Measure determines the performance and capabilities of the system or process improvement process. This includes system inventories, data assessments and validation, and process understanding. I think this may be my ‘sweet spot’! Here we are looking for an ‘As-Is’ look at this process or system within the corporation. - Read the rest of this entry »

Do You Do Data?

February 6th, 2008

I consider the first of any year a good time to reflect on what I have been doing, and what I would like to do in the new year. One thing I have learned this last year is that ‘I DO DATA’. The amazing thing is, I really really like data. OK, OK call me a geek, but I think that the quality, governance, and process issues surrounding data are fun! - Read the rest of this entry »

Third Party Data

December 4th, 2007

The management concerns about data (as discussed in previous blogs) are:

  1. Accuracy of the data collected
  2. Reliability of the data reported
  3. Relevance of the data (in general)
  4. Third party enhanced data collection

The final concern of my management team is third party data— Data that usually enhances the existing BI environment, but is not always of the best quality. Let’s define what that really means. - Read the rest of this entry »

Predictive Analytics and Data Mining

August 28th, 2007

Apparently, what is now being called “Predictive Analytics” is what I use to know as “data mining.” I guess the term “data mining” has been co-opted by so many different applications that it has lost its original meaning. The definition of data mining that I was familiar with had to do with using algorithms for learning and extracting “knowledge” from data sets - another term, KDD (”knowledge discovery in databases”) has also been used. - Read the rest of this entry »

Virtual Worlds, Real Money

July 17th, 2007

My kids are addicted to “tween-age” social networking web sites, specifically Club Penguin and Webkinz. These sites are relatively simple, they provide hours of gaming entertainment, and they provide an interesting virtual interface for interaction, as each “player” is represented via an avatar that the player can house, dress, feed, etc., using virtual money earned through either playing games or taking on “work tasks. - Read the rest of this entry »

The Sopranos and Datus Interruptus

June 20th, 2007

Re: The Sopranos finale, add me to the list of all those people who went “Whaa???” Amidst some none-too-subtle buildup, the screen went black. No resolution. No tying up loose ends with Dr. Melfi. No coming clean with Carmela. Nada-bing! Against a Journey soundtrack, no less. It was all so unsatisfying. - Read the rest of this entry »

Why Metadata?

April 17th, 2007

I was working with a client on a design and process issue the other day. It seems they wanted to include a new associative table (resolves a many to many relationship) in an existing data model. - Read the rest of this entry »

It Takes Just as Long to Do it Wrong as it Does to Do it Right!

January 22nd, 2007

Mama always told me, “Joyce Ann, it takes just as long to do something right as it does to do it wrong!” Mom thought I never listened - but I did. Now I find that, sure enough, every time some company says they will go back and fix an issue after we implement - THEY DON’T! Sound familiar? So the question is “What does it cost to do it wrong?” - Read the rest of this entry »

YAHOO — Happy New Year to You!

January 18th, 2007

Let’s see, New Year’s Resolutions — Nah, I always break them. But one thing I can promise is that 2007 is going to be a very interesting (and fun) year! I believe that companies are just now beginning to comprehend the integrated, enterprise-wide perspective of information. - Read the rest of this entry »

A Case for Data Integration!

January 15th, 2007

Most of you who have ever met me know that I am a healthy person. I try very hard to eat right and exercise. So, going to the hospital for a procedure where they had to put me under was the last thing I wanted to do. - Read the rest of this entry »
