Putting It All Together – Six Sigma and You!

September 18th, 2008

Here are the facts, Jack!

All outcomes (or the results) are determined by the inputs. I love this! It is much like ‘Garbage in/Garbage Out’! Don’t you think? This says that what I put into a system (data and process steps) determine how effective the system will be. If we put in redundant steps with incorrect data – we have created an ineffective system. This costs the corporation money! - Read the rest of this entry »

Six Sigma and Data Quality – Measure

August 27th, 2008

The next step in the six sigma methodology is measure. Measure determines the performance and capabilities of the system or process improvement process. This includes system inventories, data assessments and validation, and process understanding. I think this may be my ‘sweet spot’! Here we are looking for an ‘As-Is’ look at this process or system within the corporation. - Read the rest of this entry »

Six Sigma and Data Quality - Define

August 20th, 2008

Define includes the instruments that any corporation uses to define a project. This could be problem statements, scopes, feasibility studies, and a project plan. Basically, you are selecting a project based on a prioritization process. I would think this is a steering committee or corporate governance committee. After the project has been selected, and it is feasible to start, a problem statement and scope is created. - Read the rest of this entry »

Six Sigma and Data Quality

July 31st, 2008

Some of my clients say, “Heh, I’m a Green Belt or Black Belt in Six Sigma, what are you?” My response was usually, “Huh?” I kept thinking, what is the big deal about Six Sigma? It is a problem solving methodology with lots and lots of diagrams, to improve business performance. Then I started thinking how I could apply this methodology to some of my data issues (usually in companies who use Six Sigma!). - Read the rest of this entry »

RFP (Request for Proposal)

July 29th, 2008

I just read a RFP for an integrated system that has about 62 source systems. This is scaring the heck out of me! I am sitting here thinking the following: - Read the rest of this entry »

Gartner Magic Quadrant – The Results are In!

July 16th, 2008

Seems that http://blogs.ittoolbox.com keeps up with the Gartner Magic Quadrant results for Data Quality Tools. The results showed that DataFlux took the lead (by a small margin) in the data quality space. I see the war beginning between the quality vendors. Not a bad thing for the rest of us who use these tools. - Read the rest of this entry »

Data Quality Strategy

June 26th, 2008

I was just creating a data quality strategy for a customer going through a conversion from multiple sources to one integrated database. While doing the conversion, new software will be introduced and propagated out to the organization. Not an easy task for any organization! Not only are they doing a conversion, but they purchase enhancement data from a third party, which means more quality and integration issues to address. So here is what I know: - Read the rest of this entry »

CIO Forum

June 19th, 2008

I am on an airplane again! This time, I am on my way to be a panel member at a local CIO Forum. What fun is that? I will be with two clients answering questions about business intelligence, and the impact it has on an organization. I get to be the BI Expert. I like that part! - Read the rest of this entry »

Integration in a Big Way!

June 12th, 2008

I am so excited! I get to work on an integration project that is huge. I mean really, really big — and it affects an entire organization. I hope I have a ton of insightful findings to share with you. Where to start, Where to start? After the project plan is solidified, roles and responsibilities are identified. Now a role is not necessarily a person! For example, there could be a data architect, business architect, technical architect, and a business intelligence architect role. Are you confused? I was, until we dug into the responsibilities of each role. Here you go - Read the rest of this entry »

Summer Cleanup!

June 5th, 2008

Summer is just around the corner — time to clean up inside and outside. I had all the popcorn taken off the ceiling in my house. No small task with two-story ceilings. The workers had to rent scaffolding, and they made a big mess. While we lived confined in a dusty portion of the house for a week and half, the ceilings now look wonderful. The ceiling is now clean, less cluttered, and can be dusted. Yeah! I am so happy! - Read the rest of this entry »
