During April, I joined Tony Fisher in presenting Data Governance at a series of executive briefings. During the course of those events, we captured a number of audience questions that we were unable to address during the event, and I plan to address a number of these here in the blog.
Here is a good one: Is data stewardship that first process in moving into data governance?
The problem with stewardship is that it has many facets and definitions, each of which comprises some aspects of the governance cycle. So to say that stewardship is the first process would be correct, although I would better characterize the operational process as:
- Identifying the key information policies that relate to business objectives
- Identifying the metrics to be used for measuring conformance to those information policies
- Determining the data rules that roll into those metrics
- Identifying the critical data elements

David, very nice post. I concur that establishing Data Stewards is a good first step towards Data Governance. From there, you can do the numbers you listed and more, including finding issues, fixing pain points, etc.
